Every organisation invests time and resources in gathering and preparing business information for use within its operations. Much of this information is held in electronic format which is subject to more and more frequent attack by viruses, worms, hackers etc. Much is also retained on paper or in your people and this also presents risks.
Many do not however put a true value on the role information plays in securing their future. The loss of such information would not only impact on your day-to-day activities but could incur significant costs. These can be associated with the recovery of the data or even more so with the loss of reputation which can result from security breaches.
The management and security of business information forms a significant part of good Corporate Governance and is ever more subject to legal requirements (Data Protection Act and Information Security Management Standard, BS7799). It is therefore becoming increasingly important that organisations identify their most vital information assets and have a business focused strategy in place to secure them.
Are you aware of your information assets and their vulnerability to attack or loss? Are you sure that you are protecting them in adequate ways?
